Activities and News

The project’s activities focus on promoting the working network with partners and the exchange of experience and knowledge, in addition to the dissemination of information related to national, regional and international activities in order to reinforce the exchange and dissemination of knowledge among all parties concerned by the gender dimension in the water sector.

2010

National Seminar on « Integration of the gender Dimension Genre into Water Management in Tunisia», on December 10th, 2010, Tunis (Tunisia).
CAWTAR organised a national seminar that offers to project’s partners the opportunity to share, exchange and disseminate the knowledge generated in the framework of the GEWAMED project. It also aims to capitalise the experiences, initiatives and lessons leant by stakeholders on the gender dimensions in water management.

Subregional GEWAMED Training Course on «How to mainstream gender in water management: Political and Institutional dimensions of Gender mainstreaming in water resources management, Selected Maghreb countries' Experiences and Challenges'Morocco», Tangier, Morocco, 18-21 October 2010

CAFRAD, with the assistance of MAI-B, is planning a four-day Sub-regional training course on “How to mainstream gender in water management: Political and Institutional dimensions of Gender mainstreaming in water resources management, Selected Maghreb countries' Experiences and Challenges' to be held in Tangier, Morocco, from 18-21 October 2010. The course will gather selected Maghreb Countries to share their experiences and challenges in the field of gender and water resources management with the main objective of creating awareness on gender and water issues in the selected Maghreb Countries and promoting changes that improve gender issues in water management.
The course will be in French and the number of participants sponsored and budgeted for to attend the course is about 18 plus two resource persons. Participants will be from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania and possibly Spain and France, and they will be actors already involved in the management of water resources and in rural development programmes whose relatively high professional level will enable them to use the knowledge acquired in the course to integrate a gender perspective in their future development activities. 

The International Conference on Integration of Gender Dimensions in Water Management, Amman, Jordan, 21-26 March 2010

In the framework of the project entitled “Mainstreaming Gender Dimensions into Water Resources Development and Management in the Mediterranean Region”, the Jordan University partnered with the International Center for Mediterranean Advanced Agronomic Studies in Bari (Italy) and the Gender and Water Alliance (GWA) to hold an international conference on the “Integration of the Gender Dimension in Water Management” in Amman (Jordan) on March 21-26, 2010.
The conference aimed at reinforcing knowledge in terms of social gender and water management in the Mediterranean region through the exchange of experience and results achieved by the project.
2008

2008, International Sanitation Year

The United Nations declared 2008 to be the International Sanitation Year. During the first preparatory meeting held in UNICEF headquarters in New York, participants discussed means to highlight the importance of achieving Objective Seven of the Millennium Development Goals, aimed at reducing by half by 2015 the rate of people lacking permanent access to a drinking water supply and basic sanitation services.

Training Session on “The Sustainable Management of Water Resources and Technology”; March 12-13, 2008 in Tunis, Tunisia

The Water Research and Technology Center held, with the collaboration of the Waters Processing and Recycling Laboratory and the Borj Cedria Technopark, a training session on the “Sustainable Management of Water Resources and Technology” on March 12-13, 2008 in Tunis. This session aimed at building the capacities of local associations and organizations to further reinforce their knowledge and reproduce applications in terms of the sustainable use of water resources and technology.

Regional Workshop on the “Integration of the Gender Dimension in the Management of Water Resources for Rural Development” on May 19-22, 2008 in Tunis, Tunisia

In the framework of the project entitled ““Mainstreaming Gender Dimensions into Water Resources Development and Management in the Mediterranean Region”, CAWTAR held a regional workshop in Tunis on “The Integration of the Gender Dimension in the Management of Water Resources for Rural Development”. The following presentations were given during the workshop:

  1. Inheritance right, real estate and property rights, and water rights in North Africa and in the Middle East;
  2. Institutionalizing the gender dimension and rural development;
  3. The gender dimension and capacity building to achieve rural development.

Second Regional Workshop on “Gender Indicators, Water and the AQUASTAT System” in July 2008 in Tunis, Tunisia

CAWTAR held the second regional workshop on “Gender Indicators, Water and the ‘AQUASTAT’ System” in July 2008 in Tunis. The workshop included the presentation of national reports (Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco) after bibliographical research and a survey on “Gender and Water Indicators in the Agricultural Sector”. Participants also discussed the Regional Report on the Construction of Gender Indicators in the Agricultural Sector.

Celebration of the Rural Women Day: National Conference onNovember 24, 2008 in Tunis, Tunisia

CAWTAR held in cooperation with MAFEPA an international conference  to disseminate the results of the project related to the integration of the gender aspect in the development and management of water resources in the Mediterranean region, and to promote the project’s components among stakeholders and parties concerned by the gender approach in the water sector including national governmental institutions, non governmental organizations, research institutes, international organizations, the private sector and the media.

 Second Regional ToT Training Session on “The Integration of the Gender Dimension in the Integrated Management of Water Resources: on October 27 – December 2, 2008 in Rabat, Morocco

The Gender and Water Alliance partnered with the Hassan II Institute for Agronomic and Veterinary Studies in Rabat, Morocco to hold the 2nd Regional ToT Training Session on the Integration of the Gender Dimension in the Integrated Management of Water Resources on October 27 – December 2, 2008 in Rabat, Morocco. This second regional training session follows the regional meeting held in Beirut, Lebanon in July 2006, and focuses on issues related to the gender dimension and water in general, and more particularly on research planning and advocacy, as well as on skill development in the Arab World. The first regional session on the “Integration of the Gender Dimension in the Integrated Management of Water Resources in the Arab Region” was held on November 26, 2007 in Tunis with the cooperation of CAWTAR.

Regional Workshop on “Planning in the Field of Water Resources and Education” onOctober 27-30, 2008 in Rabat, Morocco

The French Research for Development Institute (IRD) held with the cooperation of the Hassan II Institute for Agronomic and Veterinary Studies in Rabat, Morocco a regional workshop on “Planning in the Field of Water Resources and Education” in the framework of the project on “The Network for the Exchange of Methodologies and Experiences in the Field of the Sustainable Management of Water Resources and Lands in the Mediterranean Region (SOWMED)”. The workshop was held on October 27-30, 2008 in Rabat, Morocco and focused on the following topics:

  1. Management of water resources and lands in large provinces;
  2. Development in urban and suburban areas;
  3. Development of the management of water resources in agriculture (quantitative and qualitative management);
  4. Water resources sustainable management;
  5. The socioeconomic approach and gender equity water resources.

World Prize of HH Prince Sultan Ibn Abdulaziz for Water

The Third International Congress on Water Resources and Arid Environments (2008) and the First Arab Forum on Water was held by the King Saoud University- Prince Sultan for Research on the Environment, Water and Desert, with the cooperation of the World Prize of HH Prince Sultan Ibn Abdulaziz for Water, the Ministry of Water and Electricity, and the Arab Waters Ministerial Cabinet . On this occasion, a reception was held to grant the World Prize of HH Prince Sultan Ibn Abdulaziz for Water in its third edition, 2006-2008, on November 16-19, 2008 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

This prize represents a strong symbol reflecting the shining image of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as well as its continuous efforts for and contributions to human civilization. The presentation  of this prize constitutes both an incentive to and a recognition of the efforts made by researchers in the field of innovation aimed at the protection of water by rationalizing consumption of this valuable resource,  by protecting it against pollution and improving its quality, or by other related domains.

Training of Trainers on the “Integration of the Gender Dimension in the Integrated Management of Water Resources” on November 26 - December 2, 2007 in Tunis, Tunisia

At the initiative of the Gender and Water Alliance, and with the cooperation of CAWTAR, a regional training workshop on the “Integration of the Gender Dimension in the Integrated Management of Water Resources in the Arab Region” was organized in cooperation with the Arab Network for the Integrated Management of Water Resources, the Skills Development Network for Water IntegratedManagement (Cap Net), the International Development Research Center (Canada), the Oued Mina Program and the Integration Program of the Gender Dimension in the Development of Water Resources Management in the Mediterranean Region. The workshop aimedat increasing the number of skilled and qualified trainers to provide training in the field of integrating the gender dimension in the integrated management of water resources and to reinforce their skills in the integration of the gender dimension in planning and implementing these projects in Arab countries.

First Experts Workshop on “Gender Indicators, Water and the AQUASTAT System” onMay 31-June 1,, 2007 in Tunis, Tunisia

FAO appointed CAWTAR for the coordination of a pilot project aimed at the production of qualitative indicators in the framework of the world AQUASTAT system for agricultural waters covering three Maghrebi countries (Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco). The project’s objective is the design of indicators related to gender and water resources in agriculture to be used in a specialized database that is currently incomplete. Subsequent work resulted in the design of three national reports including all national, regional and international studies, programs and projects adopted in each of the three countries in order to determine the working methodology and tools, and mainly data collection forms which field teams started filling. The first Experts Workshop focused on the integration of the gender aspect into the international inTraining system AQUASTAT, and was attended by the project’s partners,  teams of Tunisian and Algerian experts, and representatives of MAFFEPA and MARHP.

Second Workshop on the “Integration of the Gender Dimension in the Management of Water Resources to Ensure Food Safety” on March 12-14, 2007 in Larnaka, Cyprus

The  Second Workshop on “The Integration of the Gender Dimension in the Management of Water Resources to Ensure Food Safety” was held on March 12-14, 2007 in Larnaka,  Cyprus. Participants made presentations on gender and the management of water resources to ensure food safety in their respective countries, and discussed the progress of the projects in participating countries.

2006

Regional Experts Meeting on “The Role of Women in the Management of Water Resources and Mainly Irrigation Water in North African and the Middle East” on April 18-20, 2006 in Hammamet, Tunisia

The National Agronomy Institute of Tunisia (INAT) held, with the cooperation of the International Agriculture Organization, an experts’ meeting on “The Role of Women in the Management of Water Resources: Irrigation Water Case Study. This meeting aimed at:

  1. Defining indicators for the gender approach in the field of irrigation water;
  2. Integrating women into water resources management programs in order to improve their living  conditions and ensure sustainable development;
  3. Supporting the rational consumption of water resources.

National Workshop to Present a Report on the “Analysis of Women’s Role in the Management of Water Resources” on June 27, 2006 in Tunis, Tunisia

With the support of the UNDP, CAWTAR prepared a report on the role of women in the management of water resources in Tunisia and presented it during this workshop, which was attended by several gender and water management specialists representing governmental institutions and non governmental organizations in Tunisia and other parts of the world. The report was discussed and several recommendations were made to further enrich it.

First Workshop to Launch a Project on the Integration of the Gender Dimension in the Development and Management of Water Resources in the Mediterranean Region”on February 20-23, 2006 in Bari, Italy

A regional workshop was organized to launch a project on the “Integration of the Gender Dimension in the Development and Management of Water Resources in the Mediterranean Region. The workshop was held in the international Center for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies – Bari. All members of the project’s steering committee attended the workshop, in addition to the project’s coordinators, and regional experts who contributed to enriching the workshop’s various sessions.
