Welcome to the site of “Mainstreaming Gender Dimensions into Water Resources Development and Management in the Mediterranean Region”.

When the gender perspective of water management issues in Tunisia and in other developing countries is raised, a classical pattern comes to mind: women, mainly in rural areas, are responsible for the water needs in their families while they very little, if ever, contribute alongside men to decision making related to water resources and development at the local and national levels. In this framework, CAWTAR deeply believes that projects, programs and policies addressing gender-related inequalities in the water sector will undoubtedly contribute to improving the management of water resources and human development opportunities for women and men alike.

It is important to note that gender analysis in the water sector requires in most cases a specific approach, and that it is also crucial to tackle important issues such as the use of water for domestic purposes or in production, as well as the possibility of having access to some services (real estate and credits, training, etc.).

This website, specializing in the integration of the gender approach with the management of water resources, has been designed to encourage cooperation and dialogue between Mediterranean countries and hence support the exchange and dissemination of information among all parties concerned by the gender approach in the water sector.
